Get Orders of Protection in New York

Protect Yourself, Your Children & Your Future

If you are a victim of domestic violence, or if someone close to you has hurt you, threatened to hurt you, or has a history of violence, abuse, or threatening words/behavior, protecting your safety is our first priority. Orders of protection, commonly known as “restraining orders,” are legal documents that restrict the movement, contact, and behavior of the abusive party. Orders of protection make it a crime for your abuser to come near your home, school, work, or anywhere you or your children are scheduled to be.

If you still live with your abuser, orders of protection immediately force him or her to leave your home, follow custody orders, pay child support, and relinquish ownership of any weapons he or she may own.

Orders of protection may be filed against:

  • People with whom you’ve had a child
  • Former roommates/tenants/landlords
  • Current or former significant others
  • Family members related by blood or marriage
  • Anyone with whom you’ve had a long or tight-knit relationship (sexual or otherwise)

If you currently lack proof of your abuser’s behavior, you don’t need proof right now. We’ll file a petition with the local family court for “temporary orders of protection,” which take immediate effect without requiring proof from the petitioner. Once you’re safe and protected, then we’ll immediately begin building a case to petition for a permanent restraining order.
